Most students can benefit in knowing that most of what they listen to is played in one of 5 scales. If you can understand and play comfortably in each of these scales, then you’re well on your way to becoming a good lead player.
Most professional guitarists hold steadfast to just a few scales or some combination of them. So it’s best to concentrate on the 5 scales listed below. These scales will allow you pull off the best lines from your favorite guitarist, but also create a base from which you can fully express yourself.
The 5 scales most often used are;
Major Scale
Major Pentatonic
Natural Minor
Minor Pentatonic
Blues Scale (Minor Pentatonic plus an added note)
